UNDERSTANDING THE NEW TESTAMENT
by Tom Lineaweaver

The first thing we must understand about the New Testament is that none of it has been written to or about anyone today. That is not to say that none of it can be applied today. The Old Testament prophesies about the establishment of an everlasting covenant, which is a never ending covenant in Christ. What is that covenant? The article here explains that... http://www.bibleinfo.com/en/topics/new-covenant

The new covenant is a better covenant than the first, the old covenant. It was inaugurated at the cross by the shedding of the blood of Christ. Note, who would God make this covenant with? The house of Israel. It's important to understand in context what the house of Israel is. If the new covenant comes through Christ then so does the house of Israel. That those who are in Christ are the house of Israel. No one today can claim to be the house of Israel unless they are in Christ.

The following article explains who the true Israel of God is.... http://www.bibleinfo.com/en/topics/true-israel-god It is written in this article... "God has a special covenant with those who are true, spiritual Israelites." That covenant is the new covenant, or new testament. Biblically, covenant and testament are the same thing. In fact, so is the will. I'm sure you have heard of "the last will and testament." For this covenant for the house of Israel, Christ died, and when he died, he brought into force the new covenant. See Hebrews 9.16-17.

The question, what in the New Testament can be considered the new covenant? Since the new covenant is an everlasting covenant, whatever in the New Testament is of an everlasting nature, that is the new covenant. Historical facts are not. Anything specific to specific people also are not. For example, at the end of his letter to the church at Rome, there were several people Paul said to greet. Romans 16.3-15. He certainly wasn't telling anyone today to greet those people. Then in verse 16 it is written to "greet one another with a holy kiss." Was this meant for us. I don't think so. However, we can learn the principle of greeting our brothers and sisters in Christ in an appropriate way. And that could be a part of the new covenant.

Therefore, when we understand this principle that none of the New Testament was written specifically to today, but that we can derive principles from what is specifically written to those of that time, we can understand what the new covenant is.

It is also important to know that while the old covenant was for specific people, that is the children of Israel, the new covenant is also for specific people, which is those who are in Christ. The new covenant, therefore the New Testament is not for people who are not in Christ.

Hebrews 8.8 quotes Jeremiah 31.31 where God said he will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and Judah which will better than the covenant they broke. The new covenant spoken of here is the covenant that came through Christ.

Understanding the covenantal nature of the New Testament should help you understand the New Testament.
